Why I Created EZ-TV
It started with my grandmother and a television that had become too complicated.
I’m Clark, co-founder of EZ-TV.
Watching television should be a simple pleasure. But I’d seen how frustrating it had become for my grandmother. Complicated remotes, confusing menus, and too many buttons stood between her and the programs she enjoyed.
I kept thinking: surely, we could make this easier.
A Family Habit of Making Things Work Better
I grew up surrounded by engineers. My great-grandfather and his three brothers were engineers, both of my grandfathers were engineers, and so are my father and brother. Even my girlfriend is an engineer. At this point, I’m beginning to think engineering might be a hereditary condition.
Grandmother’s Ingenuity
My grandmother on my father’s side was always finding clever ways to improve everyday things—a little tape here, a piece of string or rubber band there—whatever it took to make something work better. She didn’t need a CAD program or a 3D printer. A roll of tape and a little ingenuity usually did the trick.
That habit of looking at everyday things and wondering how to improve them is deeply inbred.
My Path Took a Different Turn
I started college studying engineering and joined the National Guard during my first semester. Then I discovered that I enjoyed practical military studies more than calculus. That led me to Fort Benning, basic training, and eventually becoming an Army Ranger. Not exactly the career path my engineering professors had in mind.
Although my career took a different direction, I never lost the family interest in solving practical problems.
An Idea That Kept Coming Back
After leaving the Army, I took on another challenge: renovating a duplex I’d purchased.
The work involved plenty of repetitive tasks. By the twentieth electrical outlet, you have some time to think.
One question kept coming back to me: how could I make my maternal grandmother’s life a little easier and more enjoyable?
I remembered how simple radio controls used to be. One knob adjusted the volume. Another found your station. Of course, sometimes, someone had to tweak the aluminum foil on the rabbit ears antenna.
Why couldn’t we bring some of that simplicity to television using today’s technology?
That’s where EZ-TV began.
Bringing the Focus Back to Watching
Some modern remotes look as though their designers were paid by the button. But more controls don’t necessarily make watching television more enjoyable. My grandmother wants to watch her favorite programs without worrying about pressing the wrong button. EZ-TV grew from the idea of making those everyday actions simpler: turning the television on or off, choosing a program, and adjusting the volume.

Something Practical and Personal
- I’ve been thinking about EZ-TV for more than a year. As the duplex renovation comes to an end, I’m putting that same problem-solving energy into developing a useful product that makes life easier for seniors or other people struggling with multiple remote controls with too many buttons.
- My hope is that EZ-TV gives people challenged by technology back a little independence, a little confidence, and the simple pleasure of watching their favorite programs without frustration.
- If someone in your life could benefit, I hope EZ-TV makes their day a little easier, too.
“After all, watching TV shouldn’t require an engineering degree. And I come from a family that has plenty of those.”
